What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Some have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one can practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

What type of Reiki healings are available with Suzi?

I can perform part or full body healing sessions in my healing room in Onehunga.

The full body healing session is performed on a massage table. Here are some answers to common questions that may be on your mind:

What do we do beforehand?

  • We have a brief chat about what you would like to have worked on that day. I will ask you if there’s anything physical or emotional that you would like to release. We then move upstairs to the healing room.

Do you work with your hands on the body or off?

  • Some energy healers work on the auric level, with their hands up to 10cms away from the body. I use a very light pressure on the body and ensure that you know where I am at all times.

Will I need to get undressed?

  • Reiki healing is carried out with clothes on. There is no need to remove any clothing. I will ask you to close your eyes during the healing session so you can focus on the sensations in your body.

What’s the massage table for?

  • You choose which parts of the body you wish to have healing for. If you choose an all over healing, and you are comfortable lying on your stomach, I will work on your back first, then turn you over and work on your front.
  • If you aren’t comfortable lying on your stomach, or lying down on your back, the massage table can be adjusted so that you can sit upright or on an angle.

What if I’m hot or cold?

  • You will be covered on the massage table. I will ask you if you are warm/cool enough. I will uncover the parts that I am working on at the time, and leave the rest covered.

Which parts of my body will you touch?

  • I will use a gentle touch on the parts that you wish to have healing energy delivered to. If you have chosen an all over healing, I will place my hands on parts of your body that are known to help healing, being respectful at all times.

What will I feel?

  • You might feel a combination of sensations. You are welcome to email me later about these.
  • You may also get mental images come into your mind, or particular thoughts. These are worth taking note of – there may be "messages" in these.

How long will it take?

  • It will take up to 45 minutes for a full body healing session. Because of other commitments, we may need to complete within 60 minutes.
  • If there’s just a specific issue you want worked on, it depends on the injury/illness and how receptive your body is on that particular day.

What about afterwards?

  • I will encourage you to drink lots of water in the following days – and preferably not coffee, black tea or alcohol, especially at first. It’s best not to do anything too energetic for the rest of the day as Reiki can release toxins that then need to move out of the body.
  • Reiki has a normalising effect on the bodily functions. All the internal organs and glands are stimulated to function in a normal manner. Many years of accumulated toxins may find their way out of the body. It is not unusual to visit the toilet more often for the first few hours following a Reiki session.
  • You may experience physical sensations over the next few days and have some dreams that are different from your usual ones. Physical sensations could include old symptoms that are now ready to be released.
  • You may feel very tired that day or the next. This will pass. You may experience emotions – it’s important that you acknowledge these and process them. Try not to judge the feelings – they have arrived for a reason and will pass when you release them.

  • If you have a heart condition, or have a pacemaker, Reiki will need to be limited to short sessions of around 15 minutes each.
  • If you are diabetic, you will need to monitor your insulin as Reiki has been shown to affect the levels of insulin in the body.
  • If you are having chemotherapy treatment, you are suited to short treatments with a few days in between as Reiki releases toxins and you may get unpleasant symptoms if you have it too regularly, or for too long.
  • If you have kidney or heart conditions, it’s especially important to be aware of your fluid intake.
  • Reiki is not appropriate if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • I am offering Reiki for $80 for a full body session (if $80 isn’t affordable for you, please talk to me about what is affordable).

It is important not to over-exert yourself after a Reiki healing. Energy blockages that have been cleared through the Reiki healing will release toxins. These toxins exit your body through your bloodstream and excretion systems. To assist this process, you will need to drink plenty of water and rest. Some people feel a little tired or achy for a few hours; this passes as the toxins leave your body.

Can animals receive Reiki?

If you search on the internet, you will find many stories of Reiki healing being performed on animals. Animals are very receptive to energy healing, especially because they don't have preconceptions about what is being done. I have performed Reiki on cats, dogs and horses and am happy to help your animals if you are concerned about them.
